A New Year Is Here!

It is amazing how fast the holiday season went by. One minute I am buying lots of gifts and fighting wild shoppers (the toy section is a merciless jungle), and the next, I am watching the clock’s hands approaching 12 on New Year’s Eve.

I hope you all had a good time during the holidays and I hope you are enjoying the first Friday the 13th of the year with an appropriately spooky story.

For example, a story of murders, demons, and lots of action. Just saying.

Anyway, now that I am infinitely less busy than before, I’ll try to have more frequent updates.

Take care!

The Mailing List

This is an important one. In fact, I should have told you guys about this one ages ago.

If you want to be an indie writer, there is one thing you must do: Build a Mailing List.

There are plenty of ways to go about it, but before we address any of them, let’s talk about just why a mailing list is so important.

Now, I have a website, and I have this blog. I also have a Twitter account. If I have something to say to you guys, I just need to type it and release it on the web. However, is that really the best way to reach people?

I look at my sales dashboard, and I truly have no idea who the people who buy my books are. I don’t know how to reach them.I fully understand why that is, but sometimes I wish I could tell them, “By the way, remember that book you bought? The sequel is out. Just thought you should know.”

Sure, I put my Contact Info at the end of my books, but how often does anyone click on those links? I know for sure I never have.

Besides, even if one or two of them do check out my website from time to time, between a post, a tweet, or an e-mail, there is no denying which one feels more personal. The first two are just putting yourself out there, the third one is knocking on someone’s door.

Having a mailing list allows you to directly reach the people who are interested in what you do. For example, see the ‘Get a Free Book!’ Link above? When someone downloads that book using that link, they are automatically added to my mailing list. That means I can send e-mails to the people who have actually read my book.

I can inform them of sequels and special promos, and so on.

In fact, engaging with my mailing list via my newsletter has brought me better results than just tweeting about things.

It’s something important to keep in mind.

However, the truth will surpass their imagination!

Genre: Urban Fantasy, Young Adult

Read it Now!

Why go PermaFree?

Less than two weeks remain until Full Moon Hunt is out.

The time has come to make The Sleeping Town permanently free. Click the link and you’ll be able to easily and freely download a copy of the book in your preferred format for your reading pleasure.

Why am doing this?

Well, for one, the sequel is coming out. It is in my best interests to make the first book in the series as easily available as possible. It may seem like a counterproductive strategy. After all, I am not making any money off the book if I am giving it away for free.

However, consider this: If someone reads my book for free, doesn’t like it, and decides to not invest in the sequel, well, that’s probably a sale I wasn’t going to make anyway.

At the same time, if someone reads my book because it is free and buys the sequel because he discovered he liked my writing, then that’s a sale I wouldn’t have unless my book was free.

Free means more opportunities for people to discover you. Never forget that.

Look Inside and Free Samples

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but that doesn’t mean words are useless. In fact, words are pretty damn important.

Here’s the thing. Your cover may attract readers. Your blurb, ranking, and reviews make them drift ever closer to that neat little ‘Buy’ button. However, the best way for your readers to get a taste of your book is for them to, well, get a taste of the book.

In other words, the free sample.

Most important sites like Smashwords and Amazon give you the option to take a peek inside the book before buying, just enough to get an idea of what you are in for. In Amazon, this option is called Look Inside. It’s a very handy tool, but it has one downside.

Here’s the thing. Look Inside isn’t enabled immediately.

I have talked about this before, and it took me by surprise the first time I found out, but Look Inside isn’t enabled until one or two days after your book is released.

In other words, it won’t be available during your book’s pre-order period and it won’t be available on its release date.

This is a not-insignificant inconvenience when you are promoting your book.

What to do then? How do you give your readers a taste of a free sample?

The answer is pretty simple.

Give them a free sample.

Plenty of authors do it. They’ll put a couple of chapters of their books on their websites during the weeks leading up to its release. It helps them build momentum, and you can do the same thing. Go ahead. Use that blog of yours or your website if you have one. Make sure your readers get a taste of your book before it comes out.

For example, you can now read the Prologue of Full Moon Hunt completely free of charge on my website.

Just Click Here.

What are you waiting for?

Build Momentum!

At long Last, Full Moon Hunt is here!

When 2016 started my plan was to have a new book out by the end of May at latest.

That didn’t quite work out as planned. It is often said no plan survives the first contact, and it is often said because it is the honest truth.

However, today is a happy occasion!

It may be a few months later than I wanted but I am pleased to inform you all that Full Moon Hunt is now available for Pre-Order!

Michael Walker returns in a werewolf-themed adventured with more action, more characters, and more mysteries! The sequel to The Sleeping Town will be available for everyone this November 11! Pre-Order now!

For those interested in reading a preview, check out the Smashwords link which offers a 20% Sample. Amazon will also offer a sample, but their Look Inside function isn’t enabled until a few days after the book has launched for some reason, and that, I think, will be the subject of the next post.

Look forward to it!

So You want to Change your Cover

One of the advantages of self-publishing is that you get to update your book.

Book blurb not quite working out? You can change it.

You found a spelling mistake? You can fix it.

Your website changed address and you want to update that info in the Contact the Author Page? You can do it.

The cover is no different. You can change it anytime you wish to. In my case, I have been wanting to change the cover of one of my books for a while. As some of you may have noticed, the cover of Devils of Black and Gold is brand new. I even took the opportunity and used KDP’s Cover Creator. Neat little tool.

Now, here are some things you need to know about changing covers. Once you do it, your changes will go under revision, much like any other change you make to your book. However, once the change is accepted, your new cover won’t immediately appear.

You will be able to see the new cover in your Bookshelf, but you book’s Amazon page will still be using the old cover. Don’t panic if that happens. That’s just the way it goes. It’ll take around three days after the change for your cover to be updated on the Amazon page.

So yeah, if you feel your book cover isn’t working out, don’t be afraid of changing it. Experiment a little. It’s worth it.

A Word Of Thanks and Some Tips

I haven’t really gotten the chance to post much lately, but I want to thank all who supported last week’s event. My book found a lot of new homes that weekend. Didn’t manage to break into a Top 100 list unlike some other participants, but maybe next time.

Now this since blog is supposed to have useful stuff in it, here are some sites I used to promote my book during the event:

You guys ever hear of Book Bub? That awesome way of getting daily e-mails with all sorts of free and discount deals? Yeah, those are some of the free alternatives to it, because let me tell you, being featured on Book Bub? Not cheap.

If you ever run promotions, take a look at what alternatives you have to let people know your deal is out there. The two I listed are free, but there are also paid sites. There are also free sites stricter requirements such as number of stars and reviews on Amazon.

Just something to think about.

Next time: So you want to change your Cover?
